Perforce’s latest annual State of Gaming Technology report states that the top three issues currently facing game developers are funding, collaboration, and time to innovate.
More than a third of the 576 respondents, who are categorized as professionals, senior managers and executives working in gaming, media/entertainment, automotive and manufacturing, said collaboration was difficult and stated that “moving large files” was a bigger obstacle to collaboration than remote work.
90% thought availability and access to senior management was more important than “the ability to work remotely” (81%).
“Lack of talent” and “aggressive deadlines” were also cited as problems stifling innovative thinking.
Over 50% of respondents said they used game engines like Unity and Unreal for “projects outside of gaming,” and a third of respondents said they did not work in the gaming industry at all.
Perforce says this illustrates that game developers have “always been at the forefront of innovation” and that “their tools and processes are perfectly suited to the challenges of other markets.”
More than 65% of developers surveyed also said they used “AI tools,” the most popular of which was ChatGPT (47%).
