Who are BTS?
Formed in 2010, BTS is a K-pop group that originally started out as a hip-hop group but later expanded into other genres. Known for their lyrics that touch on mental health, coming-of-age, and loss, the group has become an international sensation and the best-selling South Korean music group in history.
The group is credited with sparking a wave of international recognition for South Korean pop culture, which includes girl group Blackpink, the Oscar-winning film “Parasite” and the hit Netflix series “Kingdom” and “Squid Game.”
What is compulsory military service in South Korea?
Military conscription in South Korea began in 1957 and requires all male citizens between the ages of 18 and 35 to perform compulsory military service.
Length of service varies depending on the military branch the conscript joins, with enlisted men serving 1 year and 6 months in the Army or Marines, 1 year and 8 months in the Navy, or 1 year and 9 months in the Air Force.
Once military service is completed, the individual is placed on the reserve list and must attend 3 days of annual military training for the next 5 years.
