Hedra, the AI character generation platform, has released a new version of its model, including even more realistic head movements and facial expressions.
There's also a new “stylize” feature that lets you put your character in different outfits, add backgrounds, and even change their face into a Lego or anime character.
Character is a new family of base models from Hedra designed to create more consistent and realistic humans using AI video, giving creators more control over the final result. Initially, the focus is on lip sync and head animation. Version 1.5 adds this capability.
Hedra offers a generous free plan for people to try out, and I found that it works with any human image, including photos, drawings, and even figurines. It animated the head and face fairly accurately in time with the words used in the voice track.
Putting Hedra Character 1.5 to the test
I created five characters, first via an image prompt with Flux.1 running locally on my laptop, then using ElevenLabs to create a voice for each character. Finally, I used the voice and image with Hedra to generate a video.
Each image depicts a person looking directly at the “camera,” each different enough to be a useful test. I then ran Stylize on two of them, tapping it to see completely different looks, as well as a subtle change in outfit and background. Below each description, you’ll see the full prompt I gave Flux.1 to create each character.
1. The doctor
First up, we have a middle-aged doctor wearing a lab coat. I then styled him with an extravagant outfit full of pops of color on a colorful background.
The work is not bad. There are some artifacts around the mouth and the head movement is a bit exaggerated, but it reflects the tone of the sound well. The voice matching is not AI, I found a suitable voice on ElevenLabs.

Next up, we have a character builder. This isn't a test of the AI image generator, but rather Hedra's lip-syncing and head-motion animation capabilities.
Head movement here is more natural with minimal artifacts, but eye blinking is unnatural. This is still a marked improvement over Hedra Character-1 and some other AI lip sync tools.

The barista character had the most natural blinking of the tests I did. She again had a slightly exaggerated lip movement, but overall it was a good rendition. It can maintain the friendly demeanor of the initial image and voice.

I'm not too happy with how this image turned out, looking like a bad staff mugshot rather than a video of someone talking to a camera, but the realism of the image seems to help Hedra.

Finally an older face. I made the audio pause in the middle and Hedra accurately mirrored the animation of taking a breath/gathering thoughts.
As with all tests, the mouth and head movements were exaggerated from reality but it's a big improvement.

Final thoughts
I was already a fan of how v1 animated lip movement, but with 1.5 Hedra things went even further by adding more natural head movements and facial expressions.
Stylise is also a powerful addition and gives us a glimpse of what we might see with the final, fully controllable AI video model developed by Hedra.
It allows you to easily adjust any element of your character's photo, change their appearance or even just the clothes they are wearing in the image.
The only thing it needs now is a widescreen and portrait option, and then it can be better integrated into projects made using the growing number of AI video products, including Runway and Kling.
