The German gaming market grew by 6% to €10 billion by 2023, with mobile gaming revenues almost doubling to €2.9 billion from 2018, when revenues of €1.5 billion were estimated.
This is according to new figures published by the German Association of the Video Game Industry (Game), based on data collected by Data.ai. The report shows a solid improvement compared to the 1% growth recorded last year.
This year's growth was attributed to sales of gaming consoles and accessories, as well as in-game and app purchases.
98% of mobile gaming revenue was made up of in-app purchases, while online gaming services generated €43 million and individual game sales accounted for less than 1% of total revenue, €5 million.
The game also found that the number of mobile gamers in Germany grew by 300,000 to 24.6 million by 2023, and that more than half of gamers were women (52%) compared to men (48%).
“Even though we’ve been witnessing the unstoppable rise of smartphones for almost a decade and a half, this is still a growing sector of the gaming market,” says Game CEO Felix Falk. “Mobile gaming often appeals to people with little or no gaming experience.
“The mobile gaming market has grown enormously in recent years. Alongside classic casual games for leisure time, complex games and even e-sports titles have now also established themselves. This variety is unique and one of the strengths of gaming apps.”
