Game Informer has been shut down after 33 years of publication.
As reported by Kotaku, staff were called into a meeting on Friday (August 2) by parent company GameStop, where they were informed of the closure, that the entire team had been laid off, and that severance packages would be implemented.
GameStop shared a statement on social media the same day, announcing that the site would be closing.
Former video director Alex Van Aken said that Game Informer's site had been completely shut down, leaving employees without the opportunity to back up their work. It's currently a homepage containing the statement shared on social media.
Former Game Informer content director Kyle Hilliard said the team had completed “about 70% of the next issue” before the magazine was shut down and the entire team was laid off.
GameStop acquired Game Informer in 2000.
Game Informer Australia closed in 2019, followed by two rounds of layoffs in August and March of that year.
