Just a few weeks ago, we were living in a fantasy world where Apple was supposed to launch at least two foldable devices in 2026. Ah, what young fools we were, because a new report from GSMArena claims that Apple could push back the introduction of a foldable device – any foldable device – until at least 2027 and possibly even 2028.
This prediction about Apple's foldable smartphone comes to us thanks to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, a reliable tipster whose leaks are usually accurate. According to Kuo, Apple was supposed to start producing its first foldable smartphone in 2026, but has pushed that date back to late 2027 or even early 2028.
Apple is reportedly working on a 20.5-inch foldable MacBook/iPad hybrid. As for the iPhone Flip, patent filings suggest that Apple is developing a clamshell-style device that is favored by already-released phones like the Motorola Razr or Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6.
According to Kuo's report, the hybrid will feature an 18.8-inch display, with Apple scrapping its 20.5-inch plans. The production delay is due to “technical challenges” and mechanical components, he explains.
The report doesn't mention the iPhone Flip, which was also expected to debut in 2026, as Kuo claims the foldable MacBook will be Apple's first foldable model. So any delays to that product will most likely result in a delay in the production of a foldable iPhone.
Another delay isn’t exactly a surprise when it comes to the idea of an Apple foldable device. We’ve seen reports and rumors of an iPhone Flip under various names since at least 2016. Since then, Apple has filed a number of patents related to some form of foldable device, suggesting that the company is at least thinking about foldables.
This isn't even the first time this year that we've seen reports that Apple's foldable model is being delayed or possibly even canceled.
Because we're stuck in a cycle of rumors and speculation, it's unclear what exactly Apple is looking for in a foldable device or why the Cupertino company's version keeps getting pushed back. It's hard to make one of the best foldables if you never get in the ring.
It's possible that the company is trying to be the first to offer a crease-free display, something other foldable makers haven't yet managed. Still, the longer Apple waits, the more competitors like Honor's Magic V2 or the OnePlus Open will move away and get better, as they've all had years and iterations to improve their devices.
