We’re less than a month away from Apple’s big September event, where the Cupertino company is expected to announce a slew of new products. We’re expecting to see at least four new iPhones: the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. We should also get a good look at the Apple Watch Series 10 and potentially, a redesign of Apple’s earbuds in the AirPods 4 and possibly the Apple AirPods Max 2.
Compared to rivals Samsung and Google, Apple tends to be more cautious when it comes to rumors. That doesn't mean its boat is safe from leaks, though.
We've rounded up seven of the biggest rumors we've uncovered to give you an idea of what you might see when Apple finally unveils its next generation of iPhones and other devices.
Top iPhone 16 Rumors
Bigger screens for the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max
Apple is going big this year, as there are plenty of rumors that the iPhone 16 Pro phones will increase in size. The standard iPhone 16 Pro is expected to grow from 6.1 inches to 6.3 inches, which would make it more of a mid-size phone.
The iPhone 16 Pro Max, meanwhile, is said to measure 6.9 inches, which would be a pretty big jump from the iPhone 15 Pro Max's 6.7 inches. By comparison, the Galaxy S24 Ultra and Google Pixel 9 Pro XL both measure 6.8 inches. This would make the new iPhone 16 Pro Max the largest non-foldable flagship in the US.
Lights, cameras, Capture button
We've heard conflicting rumors about this, but it's clear that Apple is adding a capture button to at least some iPhone 16 models. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, this dedicated camera button would function as a playback camera. If you press the button halfway, you activate autofocus, and if you press it all the way, you take a photo.
It gets even more interesting. By sliding your finger across the Capture button, you'll be able to zoom in and out while taking photos and videos. We expect Apple to add this feature to the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, but it could very well end up on the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus.
No price increase (maybe)
For much of the summer, it felt like tech companies from streamers to manufacturers had all agreed to raise their prices. A recent rumor suggests that Apple will keep the iPhone price the same with only a slight increase for the iPhone 16 Pro.
The base tier of each iPhone 16 is expected to remain the same. As they did with the iPhone 15 Pro Max, Apple could drop the 128GB storage capacity for the iPhone 16 Pro, which would increase the price by $100 to $1,099.
Apple Watch Series 10 Rumors
Bigger screens
Apparently, 2024 is the year Apple is going to go big with all of its products, as rumors are that the Apple Watch Series 10 will see the biggest design change since the Apple Watch 7. Rumors claim that there will be two versions, bumping the Apple Watch to 45mm and 49mm from the current 41mm and 45mm sizes.
If the renders are to be believed, the Apple Watch 10's display could measure 2 inches, making it the largest Apple Watch ever. Despite the increase in display size, it could still be smaller than the 1.93-inch Apple Watch Ultra, with thinner bezels.
Detection of sleep apnea and hypertension
If Apple can detect sleep apnea and track blood pressure on the Apple Watch 10, it will be a great reason to buy Apple's next smartwatch. Unfortunately, this capability is not yet known, so it's unclear whether or not we'll see these features on the new watch.
Reports from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman suggest that neither feature worked well in testing. Sleep apnea is also linked to blood oxygen saturation tracking, a feature that Apple has been unable to bypass due to a patent infringement lawsuit filed by Masimo Corp.
If Apple hasn't found a workaround for either of these features, we may not see them until next year. However, conflicting reports indicate that these features will launch this year.
Apple Airpods 4 Rumors
Two new versions on the way
Apple hasn't updated the original AirPods since the third generation was released in 2021. However, reports suggest that we'll see a pair of new AirPods at Apple's September event. Apparently, Apple is looking to release a more budget-friendly set to replace the AirPods 2, which Apple kept around as a cheaper option, and a follow-up to the AirPods 3.
The big difference between the two potential versions, beyond price, is ANC. The more expensive AirPods 3 sequel is said to offer active noise cancellation, something that only the AirPods Max and AirPods Pro models currently have.
